Second grade forest days begin

by Lisa Preston, Lower School naturalist

Second grade classes are spending full days at Edwin Warner Park to learn outdoor skills and more.
The Second Grade Young Naturalist Program has expanded its outdoor learning experiences to spending full days in the forest.

Each class will be outside three times this semester at the Lodge in Warner Park. The Lodge is an old Girl Scouts' camp with an old 1930s cabin nestled on a hill, surrounded by woodlands and rolling meadows all within Edwin Warner Park.

One reason for approaching this type of learning environment is research shows how children benefit from spending extended time outside. These opportunities have positive results on their ability to focus, to take risks, and to develop personal responsibility.

Activities include routines of a usual school day with additional opportunities for learning outdoor skills, exploration and discovery in the outdoors through hands-on and real-life experiences. Student are learning to prepare for weather, take care of themselves and their needs, and explore new ways of learning in the natural world.

Our first round of Forest Days is complete and proved to be meaningful for everyone.  We are so grateful to Warner Parks for partnering with us. Our next Forest Days will be in March, April, and May. We look forward to being back at the Lodge soon.
