On Saturday, May 6, more than 20 University School of Nashville fifth graders showed up to campus for a trivia competition facing teams from schools across the state. The topic? Books from the Volunteer State Book Awards list.

In Fifth Grade English Teacher Lauren Gage's classroom, students have spent the last several months reading the 20 books on the VSBA nominations list in the Middle School category. All fifth graders voted last month for the book they thought should win the top prize in this division. The winner at USN was "Starfish" by Lisa Fipps, while the winner chosen by students across the state was "Ground Zero" by Alan Gratz.

In addition to voting for their favorite book, students had the option to put together a team to compete in the Battle of the Books, a statewide trivia competition. USN fielded five teams for the competition, more than any other school. The teams gathered on Saturday, May 6 to compete against other schools both virtually and in person.

Students worked hard to prepare for this tournament, strategizing about which books each person on their team should read and practicing with sample questions. Their hard work paid off when one of our teams advanced to a nail-biting championship round and finally tied for second place. Congratulations to Maya Arsovski '30, Leela Jain '30, Kavya Shah '30, Ike Tift '30, and Avery Weinman '30.
