From the Director: An update on our athletic facilities

Director Amani Reed shares information about what families will see in the Cheek Gym and indoor pool while visiting the Edgehill Campus during Homecoming festivities.

By Amani Reed, Director

Sports are a critical component of school culture as they unite us through school spirit, as seen during the Homecoming festivities this week. Watching sports and rooting for our classmates, students, and children brings us together to the same gym, field, or court. They allow our student-athletes to escape their daily stressors and aid in their physical development. Because sports are an essential aspect of campus life, I am writing to update you on our athletic facilities.

Our indoor swimming pool has been intermittently offline for much of this month while staff and contractors installed several new pumps & new filters and reworked the system that automatically regulates salt in the water. In addition to near-daily visits from our pool maintenance company, we’ve consulted with the management and contractors of nearby aquatics centers. Our Athletics and Operations Departments are receiving feedback and advice from a well-rounded group of professionals.

The pool’s closure has meant land practices and trips to Centennial Sportsplex swimming pool for our Middle and High School swimmers and canceling home meets. We are aware of the impact the pool’s condition has had not only on our swimmers but also on student-athletes K-12. Physical Education Teachers have rotated their plans for Lower Schoolers instruction on short notice. Half of Cheek Gym is under dehumidifiers and tarps as pool water reached the gymnasium floor earlier this week.

Athletics Director Josh Scouten has been responsive to these challenges, pursued alternative practice locations for the swim teams, and worked with counterparts across other school and community center aquatics centers to troubleshoot our issues. Extensive mechanical challenges are not exclusive to USN alone or the results of us having the oldest indoor pool in Nashville, as Vanderbilt University’s Aquatics Center recently reopened after being closed several years for mechanical issues.

While we believe we have solved USN’s mechanical and electrical issues, we likely need to update the pool’s chemical system and are reevaluating the pool’s dedicated HVAC and exhaust system. As I write this column, Coach Scouten is draining the pool so our staff and consultants can conduct a complete and comprehensive assessment. Our goals are to ensure the pool is functioning properly, sustainable for use by all ages, and able to support our PE programming, swim teams, USN Summer Camps, and Horizons at USN.

Although USN’s indoor swimming facility was remodeled in 2015 and became a saltwater pool as part of the school’s centennial renovations, we know the pool deck gutters need to be replaced and had already made plans to do so during Spring Break. Draining water also means a new pool liner is likely.

This analysis and any unearthed complications may take some weeks to resolve. While we hope we will be able to finish swim season in our pool, our priority is to guarantee the air and water quality of the facility. We want to ensure it is a safe and fun place for its many year-round users for the long term. The empty pool you see today is already a win as we continue to troubleshoot and problem-solve.

We will continue to keep you updated as we make progress.
