On Thursday, August 11, HS Science Teacher & Cross Country Head Coach George Flatau and HS English Teacher & Cross Country Assistant Coach Robbie McKay welcomed the High School’s 2021 boys cross country team back to campus to present the student-athletes with their state championship rings.

The boys team won the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Division II Class A title in November 2021 and featured the following runners: Piers Mason '22, Jonathan Nichols '22, Austin Cason '23, Collin France '23, Frederick Rudolph '23, Eli Galentino '24, Evan Ozgener '24, Chris Laibinis '22, Brock Burgess '23, Henry Stack '23, Drew Brackett '24, and Clay Payne '25.

The boys cross country team has now earned a total of five championship rings making it the leading program in school history.

“It was great to get the team back together and celebrate this win right before our graduates leave for college and we start a new school year,” Flatau shared. “Don’t worry though, we still had practice — championships aren’t owned, just earned each day.”

With that dedicated mentality and a hunger for further success, the boys team closes out one chapter as this year’s girls and boys cross country teams look to start the season as competitive contenders.

Auldyn Plant '23 and Austin Cason '23 were named among Main Street Prep’s 20 to watch in their respective fields. Auldyn finished third in state last season, while Austin aims to push past last year’s fifth place finish.

"Last year the boys won the region by just a couple of points yet won state by substantially more, an improvement inspired in part by the pack of spirit bus-delivered fans. After the race, the runners credited much of their performance to the energy provided by the vocal supporters who lined the course," McKay shared. "It was definitely a championship won not just for the team but for the whole school community."

Hoping for that same support, spirit, and veteran leadership, cross country season kicks off with an opening time trial at Battle Ground Academy on Friday, August 19. Keep up with the team on Twitter by following @USNXC.
