Campuses receive summer facelifts

The Edgehill Campus underwent routine maintenance over the break, while the River Campus received several significant upgrades.

“If we’re doing our job right, you never really notice us,” Director of Operations Erik Mash '93 said during inservice at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year.

University School of Nashville’s Operations Office is integral to making daily life on Edgehill run smoothly. Operations is responsible for maintaining the school’s physical plant and much more. On a daily basis, team members can be found taking care of cleaning, building & maintenance, groundskeeping, customer service, event set up, crisis management, security, and transportation needs.

“In a perfect world, we’re always one step ahead on what the building and the people in it need,” Mash elaborated.

With 1,081 students and over 350 faculty, staff, coaches, and temporary workers using the school’s eight-acre Edgehill Campus along with the 81-acre River Campus, the Operations team stays busy even in the summer months.

Routine maintenance was the primary focus at 2000 Edgehill this summer. New floors were installed in several hallways and many walls were touched up or repainted due to general wear and tear and the unauthorized use of tape to display posters and flyers throughout the school. Mash shared that nearly $90,000 was spent on paint in the last fiscal year, much of which was used this summer.

All the furniture moved into storage containers due to the need for social distancing in 2020 was returned to classrooms as well. And, since some teachers found they no longer needed their previously stored items, Operations was responsible for moving much of the furniture to new locations across campus and organizing the remaining pieces to be donated.

Meanwhile, the River Campus has seen significant improvements and renovations. As student-athletes and families head to practices and games, they’ll encounter a much smoother ride since the main driveway was replaced and the parking lots were freshly sealed and striped. Runners will enjoy a resurfaced track with fresh lines, and tennis players will reap the benefits of recent restoration and repair work done to the courts. The much-anticipated, new bathroom facilities at the River Campus were completed over the summer too. And, the baseball practice facility is well on its way to completion — the concrete was poured on Monday, August 15.

These River Campus projects were made possible with philanthropic support from USN families. Student-athletes are energized as fall athletic seasons begin knowing they have access to quality fields and facilities for training and competition.
