When a cross country meet takes place at night, has the name Saturday Light Fever, and has a registration code of travolta, you know you're in for a fun evening of racing. The cross country team made the most of the opportunity, as they both enjoyed the atmosphere and had great races on Saturday, October 9.
The JV race felt like days of old, with loads of runners in the starting boxes, as about a dozen basketball players swelled the ranks. Within a mile, the majority of the race’s front pack consisted of USN runners, and it would stay that way throughout. The boys were led by Brock Burgess '23 in third followed by five more Tigers taking fourth through eighth. It was a dominant performance, but no more impressive than the finishes of all the basketball players in their first race, as well as the first 5k races of freshmen Beckett Dahir and Siddhi Voona. On the girls’ side, Sarah Kate Esquivel '23 found herself at the front of the race and even told the coaches she “needed to slow down,” but kept crushing it en route to a top 10 medal.
The girls’ varsity showed a ton of spirit with flash tattoos, glowing body paint, and a playlist that got the party started on the bus to the race. Auldyn Plant '23 once again led from the start, and Ava Cason '22 battled right at the edge of the top 10. Much like the boys’ team that raced after them, the girls’ depth, even without the rapidly improving Alice Frein '24, helped secure the runner-up team finish.
Meanwhile, the boys put two runners in the top 10, and with the depth of near-the-top finishes from Collin France '23, Jonathan Nichols '22, and Eli Galentino '24, narrowly took the win. Also notable was Clay Payne's sub-20 minute time in just his second race.
The disco ball trophies the team earned were a fitting signature to the evening, one made even more special by the presence of a boisterous cheering group that came to the race via spirit bus.
The team celebrated the Class of 2022 with a time trial at the River Campus for Senior Night on Tuesday, October 19 and head to regionals on Monday, October 25.
