Play the entire two halves!
USN controlled the momentum the entire game, but the one mistake they did make Harding took advantage of and scored within the last 2 minutes.
This game was such a joy to watch. It looked like an entirely different team than the first game against Valor. The midfielders did an exceptional job in keeping wide and making plays. Anabel Barzelay, Maya Parikh, Lydia Kim, and Charlotte Soslow all had great plays along the sideline that gave USN multiple chances to score. And that was the tune for the entire game. USN had at least 10 different opportunities to score in Harding Academy’s 18 yard box and even some in the 6 yard box, but they couldn't find the back of the net. Even though USN’s possession game (the ability to connect passes consistently and deliberately) was not great, they had all the momentum and energy, which kept the ball mostly in the mid field or the opponents defensive third! However, it was one mistake from USN’s defense that led to Harding’s only goal, previously Harding only had 3 clear shot attempts due to Ansley Martin’s aggressive defense. With two minutes to go, USN tried to push the ball and get a goal, but they weren’t able to deliver on such a tall order.
Despite the loss, it was a great loss for USN. They played so well together and the defensive combination of Alyana Thompson, Piper Petraglia, Margot Phillips, and Lucy Gibbs really instilled confidence in the rest of the team to be aggressive and keep attacking. USN will continue to get better at defense and will continue to get opportunities to score, but ultimately it’s up to the players to get better, and it definitely looks like they’re willing to do so.
