On Saturday, February 13, USN sent two teams to the American Quizbowl League Southeast Tournament, held online via Discord. It was the squad’s first competition in almost five months, and they faced top competition from around the region. The USN A team, consisting of Daniel Borza '21, Emily Wykoff '22, Adeolu Ajayi '22, and Frederick Rudolph '23 placed ninth overall. The B team of Leala Nakagawa '23, Meera Boyapati '23, Nicholas Tesauro '23, and Isaac Spiller '24 placed eighth in their division. Additionally, Frederick '23 tied for 15th individually in the varsity division, and Isaac '24 was 14th in junior varsity.

The following Saturday, February 20, USNQB sent two teams to the Sumner Discord Invitational, competing against a field of 19 teams, featuring some of the strongest schools in Tennessee. The A Team, consisting of Daniel Borza '21, Frederick Rudolph '23, Jonathan Chung-Bruehl '23, Leala Nakagawa '23, and Isaac Spiller '24 rocked the preliminary rounds, going 4-1. Unfortunately, a speedy Cookeville team swept them out in the quarterfinals, but they rebounded well to finish 7-2 and fifth overall. Furthermore, Frederick '23 gave a spectacular individual performance, ranking fourth individually; he will play in the solo national championship in April. The B Team of Iris Li '23, Riya Narayan '23, Meera Boyapati '23, Henry Wykoff '24, and Georgia Martin '24 played very well, gaining plenty of experience. They closed the day well, winning two games in their afternoon bracket.

“This year saw new challenges, but none the team couldn’t overcome and improve from. We continue a long tradition of being invited to the most competitive event for [quiz bowl], and I think each year we are better equipped for it,” Team Captain Daniel '21 said.

“We’ve been looking for opportunities to compete...the tournament went very well, especially our JV team, playing against some of the best teams in the state — they learned plenty from it," Coach Pat Miletich added.

Congratulations to both teams on an excellent week. Any students interested in joining quiz bowl can email Daniel '21 or Emily '22 for the practice schedule. USNQB returns to tournament action in March.
