How to navigate the 19th Avenue lot

Most Middle Schoolers should be dropped off and picked up from school in the 19th Avenue parking lot. Please follow the instructions of the Vanderbilt University Police Department and USN Operations staff directing traffic. Read on for specifics. Families with Lower Schoolers should drop off all students in the 21st Avenue garage so that our youngest students don't have to walk across campus alone.
Arrival during morning drop-off
Drivers should pull into the right and left lanes of the parking lot and have students hop out with their gear. Parents should not exit their vehicles. Students should walk along the yellow lines to the May Plaza. Please do not pass other vehicles or drive in the middle lane. Wait until USN staff directs the entire lane to move forward.

Dismissal during afternoon pick-up
Drivers should pull into the right and left lanes of the parking lot. Middle School students will be dismissed from their advisor’s room individually as their parents arrive. Simply let the USN faculty or staff member walking the lane know who you are there to pick up. Lower School families put helpful signs with students' names in their front windows. After your student is loaded into your vehicle, you may use the middle lane drive around and exit USN.

Arriving before school dismisses means not only parents waiting in cars but also vehicles overflowing from USN lots onto 19th and 21st avenues and congesting streets for through-passers. We want to be better neighbors than that.

Other reminders about parking, driving on campus
All parking spaces in the 19th Avenue lots are available to parents and visitors after 8:25 a.m. to give faculty, staff, and High School students the opportunity to park in their assigned lots. This year we're accepting guests on campus only with an appointment.

Parents and visitors may park in lanes in the 19th Avenue lot between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. If you have an appointment at USN that last in the afternoon, please move your vehicle so that other families can make their way through the driveway during afternoon dismissal.

There also are paid parking spaces at Wesley Place Garage on Scarritt Place and metered spaces along 19th Avenue South. USN families are not allowed to park in Vanderbilt lot 111. USN parents and guests parking in any Vanderbilt lot during may be ticketed or towed. VUPD will issue $75 tickets to vehicles parked in USN spots in the Wesley Garage without a USN parking permit.

So that High School students who have paid for a USN parking permit can park in their assigned spaces in the 19th Avenue lot and Wesley Garage, other students who drive to school should secure their own off-campus parking.

Faculty and students spend up to 30 minutes in the 21st Avenue garage in the afternoons and enjoy breathing fresh air free of exhaust fumes. Please turn your car off instead of leaving an idle engine running.

We also ask that you refrain from cell phone usage while driving on campus to keep drivers' attention on driving as we move hundreds of children in and out of school each morning and afternoon.
