Hassenfeld books available for summer check out

Now that summer reading lists have been published for rising fifth through 12th graders, families are beginning to ask: How can we access these books when libraries are still closed?
By Kate Pritchard, MS/HS Librarian

Our librarians are eager to get books into all students’ hands, and as soon as we have the official go-ahead, we'll begin the process of getting books to you. Although the library is not usually open for checkouts over the summer, we’ll be more than happy to check books in and out this summer and make them available to all K-12 families. Lower School families and High School students should look for a message from us with more details when the time comes.

Middle School families have the option of requesting books to be picked up on Thursday, May 21 when they drop off their students’ devices. In order to make this happen, families should find the books they want in our catalog, then put a hold on them by 12 p.m. Wednesday, May 20. Students will have to log into the catalog to do this. If your child can’t remember how to log in, they can email MS/HS Librarian Kate Pritchard for a password reminder, or parents can email her with the titles of the books they’d like.

Requests will be first come, first served, and it’s likely that many summer reading books will have multiple holds; however, there will be more chances to check books out this summer. Pritchard will send out an email on Wednesday, May 20 to all families whose holds were fulfilled, so they will know to look for their new library books on Thursday, May 21.

In the meantime, you can still browse the library catalog to learn more about the books on the summer reading lists. This page will link you to each list in our catalog. From there you can see cover images and read descriptions of each book.

Here are some other ways to access copies of the summer reading books:
  • Davidson Co. residents can get e-books and audiobooks through the Nashville Public Library. Go here if you don’t yet have an NPL card.
  • Residents of all other counties can get e-books and audiobooks through Tennessee R.E.A.D.S. Contact your local public library if you don’t yet have a card.
  • The National Emergency Library has digitized copies of over 1 million books available for free.
  • Project Gutenberg provides free e-books of works in the public domain—a great place to look for the classics.
  • LibriVox provides free digital audiobooks of public domain works, read by volunteers from around the world.
  • Local bookstores, such as Parnassus and The Bookshop, are still able to ship books to their customers.
  • Libro.fm is an audiobook subscription service with a large catalog that supports independent bookstores.
