Calendar Changes

The following letter was shared with K-12 parents, faculty, and staff at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, March 12 regarding changes to Spring Break and a move to remote learning.
Dear USN families and faculty,

Supporting the broad effort to limit community transmission of COVID-19, USN will begin its Spring Break for students at the end of events today. While there are still no known or suspected cases of the novel coronavirus within our school community, we're committed to helping to "flatten the curve" of newly diagnosed cases likely to burden the healthcare system. We'll use Friday as a time for faculty and staff to consult with one another about best strategies for remote learning. After-School, co-curricular activities, athletic practices and competitions, and USNA events are suspended starting tomorrow until further notice.

If you need to pick up anything here to be prepared at home, please do so Thursday & Friday. This includes textbooks, notebooks, devices, and supplies students will need to study from home as well as anything they may need from the Health Room.

For the past week or two, I've been part of an evolving conversation with independent school leaders around our city. We're working to speak with one voice in coming weeks, maximizing the difference we can make in doing our part for the wider community. Look for updates from me about the progress of that partnership, and look for specifics from the respective USN Division Heads about plans for K-12 learning from a distance. To start, assume that we will move to a remote learning modality following the coming break on Wednesday, March 25, and we will make determinations on a weekly basis beyond that point based on conditions on the medical landscape.

Here's where a new set of challenges begin. For social distancing at scale to generate a salutary effect, we each need to make sacrifices. I'm acutely aware that the resulting hardships will vary substantially from household to household, and we'll weigh that reality in every decision yet to come. But as I suggested in the piece we sent out last night, there is great potential power in collective action

We'll be doing our level best in this to stay in regular and consistent contact. Please err on the side of extra communication back our way — and you're never wrong to address anything straight to me. Let's resolve to function within the spirit of these measures to protect the health and well being of everyone in our communities, at USN and beyond.

Most sincerely,
Vince Durnan
Director
