Mason '20 named scholar in prestigious science competition
For his cancer research, the senior earned a scholarship and stipend for USN to use for STEM-related activities through the Regeneron Science Talent Search.
Society for Science & the Public has named Mason Lee '20 as among the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2020, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. He will receive $2,000. University School of Nashville will also receive $2,000 to use toward STEM-related activities.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars were selected from 1,993 applications received from 659 high schools across the United States and eight countries. Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists.
Mason has been working in the lab of pathologist and USN parent Vivian Weiss and is the lead author of a scientific paper recently accepted for publication in Endocrine-Related Cancer, the flagship journal of the Society for Endocrinology. The title of the manuscript is “Novel three dimensional cultures provide insights into thyroid cancer behavior.”

The Regeneron Science Talent Search provides students a national stage to present original research and celebrates the hard work and novel discoveries of young scientists who are bringing a fresh perspective to significant global challenges. This year, research projects cover topics from medicine and health to environmental science.
