Holiday Songfest is a special time of music and learning in Lower School as it brings us together to celebrate and share the diversity of our USN community. Holiday Songfest is a longstanding event in Lower School with its inception in the late 1980s celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas.

Over the years as the USN student population diversified so has our Holiday Songfest to include: Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights; Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival; Kwanzaa, a week-long cultural celebration recognizing the African diaspora, harvests, and arts; and Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observed worldwide by Muslims. During music class, Lower School students learn the history, the traditions and the songs related to each of these special holidays. Students share their cultural experiences which strengthen the respect and understanding of each celebration.

Each homeroom in first, second, third, and fourth grades will celebrate its own Holiday Songfest in the Lower School Music Room as outlined in the schedule below. Parents and guests are invited to come and participate with their student in this wonderful musical experience. Because all 64 kindergartners will have their Songfest together in the music room at the same time, we will not have space for parents and visitors.
