High School welcomes new faces
Meet College Counselor Jesse Chavez, Spanish Teacher Kate Sullivan, Dance Teacher Caren Lyons and learn about other role changes in High School.

Jesse Chavez joins us as our new College Counselor from the Bosque School in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he served in the same role. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of New Mexico and is pursuing a master’s degree in the same field. In his spare time, Jesse likes to listen to podcasts and audiobooks, travel, hang out with friends, and try new foods. He’s also an avid basketball fan, both as a spectator and a life-long player. Most importantly, he’s thrilled about helping High School students find their pathways post-high school.

Caren Lyons comes to USN as a dance teacher and leader of the High School dance program. Previously, Caren worked as a dance therapist, teacher, and choreographer in the Northeast. Her training includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance at Oklahoma City University and a Master of Arts Dance/Movement and Expressive Arts Therapy from Lesley University. In her spare time, Caren loves to travel, Australia being her favorite spot. She’s also fond of her favorite furbaby, Shadow, who is enjoying being back in Nashville.
Kate Sullivan is teaching Spanish in our World Languages department. Previously, Kate was a Lecturer at Vanderbilt University in the Spanish Department as well as a Graduate Instructor at Florida State University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Latin American Studies from Flagler College and a Master of Arts from Florida State University. Additionally, Kate has completed doctoral-level coursework at Florida State. Originally from southern New Jersey, her hometown hosts the longest-running rodeo east of the Mississippi. Kate cares for her two cats, Meow Meows and Sir Henry Duke of Wildberry -- ask her about the names. Kate also has extensive international experience, living in various countries in Latin America during her lifetime.
We’re thrilled to have these three outstanding faculty members joining the High School team.
Additionally, we have people taking on new leadership roles in high school.
Science Teacher Tamara Berthel is stepping into the role of 10th Grade Dean. History Teacher Matthew Haber is the new 12th Grade Dean. Finally, Science Teacher Anne Dervan is taking over the role of Science Department Chair.
