Science Olympiad is a national series of competitions, with each competition comprised of over twenty testing and building events, including test subjects as varied as Thermodynamics and Herpetology and building events with new and different specifications each season. This year's USN team, led by Hannah Laibinis '19, Annie French '19, and Amanda Ding '19, just finished a successful and productive competition season with a trip to the State Competition at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Mason Lee '20, and Sheeline Yu '21 placed third in the Dynamic Planet event. Yu and Ding also competed in Sound of Music and placed sixth in the state.

This journey to Knoxville, began in the fall as team members started preparing for events.  Following a preliminary invitational competition in January, the competition season began in earnest in March with a team of 23 students competing at Nashville State Community College in the Regional Competition. In an impressive showing, this group of students placed first in five events and did not place lower than fourth in any event. As Region Runner-up, the team qualified for the State Competition.

Many of our original team members had conflicts that prevented them from competing at state.  In the month between the regional and state competitions, we had a flurry of changes to our roster and a heart-warming demonstration of the USN student community pulling
together. Eight students who had not previously competed in Science Olympiad, stepped up to become part of the 15 person state team. With care and dedication, the new recruits received materials the original team members had been working on for months. Whether they were able
to compete with the team or not, the original and new team members worked collaboratively to prepare for the events.

Congratulations to all the team members:
