USNA gears up for 2020-2021

Although some of our hallmark events will not take place this fall, USNA will continue to work to support the school and still needs parent volunteers. Read on for updates on parent socials, Artclectic, and two monthly USNA meetings to be more accessible to working parents.

While flipping through photos of last year’s USNA events, one caught my eye in particular. It was a snapshot of Fall Fest taken from the second-floor breezeway and capturing hundreds of USN families gathered on the backfield of the school, burgers in hand, and kids piled up on each other in the bouncy in the background. I was struck by this photo as I looked at it through the lens of 2020. Social distancing, hand sanitizer, masks—those words were not in our vocabulary a year ago. And even if we parents knew that the bouncy house was not the most sanitized place in the world, we did not care. Our kids were having fun with their friends and we were able to be together as a community.

This year is not the same for USNA. Our usual slate of activities for the fall, including Fall Book Frenzy and Fall Fest, cannot happen. However, USNA approaches this school year with an eye towards flexibility while staying true to the mission of USNA to promote an enduring sense of community while facilitating volunteer assistance for faculty and staff and hosting events that support the school.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The first USNA meeting of the year is on Wednesday, September 23 via Zoom (another new vocab word for 2020). We are hosting two meetings — at 8:15 a.m. and 8 p.m. — so that as many parents as possible can attend. Find the Zoom links each month in the Lower School WAG, In the Middle, and Tigers on Edgehill.
  • Sign up to volunteer at www.usn.org/volunteer. Our volunteer opportunities will look different this year, but we will still need volunteers to support the school and our faculty and staff.
  • Artclectic is happening ... online! The virtual show must go on. Artists are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase their work online. Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 22 through Saturday, October 24, and please fill out the volunteer form at www.usn.org/volunteer if you would like to volunteer for this event.
  • Parent socials are moving to the spring with high hopes that we will be able to gather in person when the daffodils are blooming.
  • Each year USNA prints school directories at the cost of $8 each. In order to save costs this year, we are asking parents to find this information in the school's online directory, accessible through the usn.org intranet. To opt-in for a printed directory, please fill out this form.
