Celebrating the Class of 2022

Opening Note from Dr. Walker

As I think about the last four years we’ve shared, they’ve been one breathtaking run. None of us would have ever anticipated the way that the world has shifted and tilted since we began our journey together in 2018. Watching you weather the storms with grace, care for one another, and compassion for your school gives me such hope. It gives me reason to believe more deeply in my profession, our commitment to community, and the need for joy alongside the tough times.

You've given me a reason to be hopeful, as each of you has remained connected to one another. And you will remain connected. The relationships you've forged in your time at USN, both with your classmates and your teachers, are powerful and they are enduring. Allow those relationships to sustain and nurture you as you move forward into life beyond Edgehill.

Congratulations on your leadership and accomplishments. Your class has personified our school's mission — you all have shown our campus and our community what it truly means to value and inspire integrity, creative expression, a love of learning, and the pursuit of excellence.

Quinton P. Walker, Ed.D.
Head of High School

Each Convocation at USN is marked by the presentation of our Distinguished Alumni Award. The 2022 award recipient, Mike Shmerling ‘73, will address the class, share insights about what’s been possible for him by virtue of attending USN, and welcome the Class of 2022 into the Alumni Association. A reception immediately follows in the Hassenfeld Library.

Dress for the event is business casual for all guests. Attendance is required for all seniors.

Senior Parade: Canceled Due to Inclement Weather
The newest tradition of Graduation Week, the Senior Parade, is a chance for seniors and families to bring all their energy to the River Campus one last time. Graduates should plan to arrive and begin queuing for the car parade at 6 p.m. The parade, grand marshaled by Lower School Head Amy Woodson and High School Head Quinton Walker, will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. The more car decorations and noisemakers the better. We’ll have a few surprises for you along the way, too, thanks to Dean of Students Nicole Jules, leader of this can’t-miss event.

Seniors, prepare for your glamor shot in the car by sitting on the passenger side of whatever vehicle is moving you through the parade.

Senior Day and Graduation Rehearsal
Senior Day is Thursday, May 26 beginning at 9 a.m. This event is led by Senior Class Dean Matthew Haber in partnership with the Alumni & Development Office. It’s a day of celebration, reflection, and preparation for all that’s in store for Graduation Weekend.

Senior Day concludes with Commencement Rehearsal at 2 p.m. Director Vince Durnan and Head of High School Quinton Walker will meet students in the Auditorium to provide pertinent information to graduates for the ceremony. Following the briefing, students will rehearse Commencement Exercises from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. Students who are speaking or performing at Commencement will need to have all equipment on-site and speeches & performances prepared for a rehearsal starting at 3:45 p.m.

Attendance is required for all seniors.

Class of 2022 Commencement

2022 Commencement

Commencement is truly the closing event to the 2021-2022 academic year. We’re thrilled to honor this year’s graduates at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29.. This year’s Commencement Exercises will take place on Magnolia Lawn of Peabody College.

Graduates are expected to be assembled in Hassenfeld Library no later than 12:30 p.m. Guests are welcomed to begin finding seating on Magnolia Lawn at that time. The ceremony will begin promptly at 2 p.m. and, should all go to plan, conclude by 3:05 p.m. Immediately following Commencement, USN will host a reception for all graduates and their guests in the Auditorium.

Commencement Frequently Asked Questions
Parking: Graduates are expected to park in Vanderbilt’s Lot 77. The 19th Avenue lot is reserved for those who need accessibility parking accommodations; please help us keep that lot free for those who need it. All other guests are welcomed to park in USN's 21st Avenue lot. Overflow parking is available across the street from the 19th Avenue parking lot (Vanderbilt ROTC lot) or Lot 77. USN will run shuttles to Magnolia Lawn for anyone who needs it.

Ticketing: Due to the relaxed COVID-19 protocols, there will be no tickets or limits on the number of guests that a graduate can bring to the ceremony.

Seating: With almost 2,000 seats, we encourage students to bring as many guests as they’d like. Seating for immediate families is directly in front of the stage and is available on a first come, first served basis. The tent opens at 12:30 p.m. for all guests; we ask that you not arrive earlier as last minute preparations will most assuredly be taking place.

Inclement Weather: If the weather forecast for Commencement Sunday looks less than promising, we will begin communicating with students and families of the Class of 2022 at 11 a.m. We will provide hourly updates as needed. Rain would not cancel the ceremony; storms might postpone the ceremony until later in the afternoon. As a final resort, we would look at Monday, May 30 as the inclement weather date.

Cooling Stations and First Aid: We are all accustomed to May in Tennessee. While we can hope for the 72 degree weather that welcomed the Class of 2021 on its Commencement Day, the temperatures are likely to be significantly warmer. Should any guest need it, there will be a cooling station available on Peabody Lawn. Additionally, we will have medical personnel on site should anyone require attention.

Streaming Services: We have invested in a partnership with Gary Musick Productions and Vanderbilt University IT to provide streaming of the Commencement Exercises. Anyone who wishes to view the livestream can do so at the USN YouTube page.
