Ecology camp will provide students with opportunities to connect to the ecosystems around them. Campers will investigate wetland, forest, and urban ecosystems as junior ecologists, observing and collecting specimens to examine back in the lab. Campers will explore relationships between animals, plants, and soil in each ecosystem, then design their own miniature ecosystem to take home. Campers will also investigate humans' impacts on the wild ecosystems around us and human-manipulated ecosystems we rely on, such as gardens and farms. The camp will include field trips to USN's River Campus and a local garden. Kids will be outside for parts of each day, and they will need long pants, sunscreen, insect spray, and water for their outdoor adventures.

We offer two camps this summer with the intention that students will choose one of these camps, but not both. Learning proper use of lab equipment, summer science campers will safely apply the principles of science inquiry, utilize mathematics of science, investigate technology and engineering, and follow proper science record keeping while enjoying the dynamics of being young scientists. The two camps are independent of one another and filled with exciting studies: Camp Session 1 is a pure science investigation which includes, but is not limited to, building the model of an eye, making alloys, investigating color theory, inquiring into water life using microscopes, investigating how boomerangs fly, building cyberspace robots, creating volcanic lava, and many more creative activities. Camp Session 2 is a unique integration of science and mathematics such as teaching hamsters how to run a maze, science and math of toy cars, termite mathematics, geometry of refracted light, determining the acceleration of gravity, and investigating the biology, chemistry, physics, and math at a local river, and additional surprises.

You can be a rocket scientist, and by the end of the camp week, you’ll have a launch-ready missile to prove it. The Fisk University/USN Rocket Camp will teach students how to design and build their own, payload-bearing rockets with “D-G” class engines. Students will work in multicultural teams and use computer software to help manage the design and data analysis components of their projects.
It Really Is Rocket Science is suited to all students who enjoy collaboration, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving. A passion for math and science is a plus, but humanities buffs whose eyes tilt toward the stars will also enjoy this fun and hands-on exposure to Newton’s laws, the Kinematic Equations, and Engineering. |

 Teen Cooking  Teen Cooking Director: John Kleiner

More and more pre-teens and teens are taking an interest in learning how to cook. Cooking is an enriching experience. It applies critical reading, science, and mathematical skills to purposeful activity that offers tangible results and almost immediate gratification. By learning the differences between terms such as mince, whisk, sauté, proof, and fold through hands-on experience, students will have the confidence to tackle any recipe they might encounter. This camp offers students an opportunity to learn essential culinary techniques while making great-tasting foods that they get to sample at the end of each day’s lesson. We will explore more advanced cooking techniques, and students will have more say in what we cook as we focus on things such as menu planning and meal presentation. The final day of each session will end with a shared buffet for students and invited guests.

The Creative Movement and Dance Camp will be an exploration in movement, performance, and choreography. A typical day will consist of warm-up and across the floor exercises, learning a routine, costumes, and snacks. You may even learn moves like those of Miley Cyrus and the kids from High School Musical. Alice and Aliza are recent graduates of USN, have each been dancing for over ten years, and have plenty of fun exercises and dance routines to share. Dancers of all levels of experience are welcome. Storytelling, games, music, journaling, drawing and other activities teach students the ancient art of yoga. Students will practice physical postures (asanas) that help develop flexibility, strength, improved posture, and a positive body image. We will also focus on the importance of breath, which improves concentration and aids in,stress management. *Prerequisite – Beginning/ Intermediate Musical Theatre Dance camp or prior dance experience. Be ready to “Bop to the Top” and learn more advanced dance step and combinations. In this camp you will learn the intricate musical theatre movement and dance. This camp is specialized so that it just focuses on beginning tap, jazz, and ballet. It will also prepare those students wanting to be a part of the USN Middle School Musical. So come out and strut your stuff and “ALL THAT JAZZ”! All students participating will receive a musical theatre dance T-shirt.

August 10-14 Morning Session (8:30-11:30) Boys’ Soccer  Boys’ Soccer Director: Daniel Gordon
Rising 1st-8th $125.00
USN offers a summer soccer camp for boys on the beautiful fields at the River Campus. Led by USN varsity coach Daniel Gordon, the camp will emphasize the basic skills of soccer and helping players reach the next level. Young soccer players will work on their goalkeeping, attacking, and defending skills. The curriculum will also focus on individual techniques to be applied to match play. Students should bring a sack lunch, water bottle, sun screen, towel, shin guards, cleats, and tennis shoes.
