Announcing USN Reads

"USN Reads" is a community-wide book read creating the opportunity for all of us to have a shared experience reading great literature.
Each fall, our community comes together to celebrate all things books with our Fall Book Frenzy. To add to our enthusiasm for reading, we are launching a community wide read called USN Reads.  It is a chance for all of us to have a shared experience reading great literature.

This year, we have chosen two books for USN Reads: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. Both award-winning books are set during World War II, with Doerr’s characters living in occupied France, while Bradley’s book takes place in the English countryside.

On the opening night of Fall Book Frenzy, we will gather as a community to expand our literary horizons and discuss our collective experience in reading these books. We anticipate that our panel discussion will include both literary gurus and World War II veterans.

By choosing two different books, we hope to provide something for everyone. All the Light We Cannot See offers an engaging novel for older students, alumni, parents, and the wider USN community.  The War That Saved My Life is a page-turning read-aloud for the whole family or a book that will captivate your middle grade reader. Your student will find both books on their USN summer reading list, and you can start a new tradition by having a USN reading list of your very own.

With both books set during World War II, we hope that it will create a school-wide discussion about this time in history and also about the issues that still echo to this day. Parnassus Books has graciously agreed to offer a USN night at their store on Tuesday, May 24 from 5:30-7:30.  Parnassus will donate 20% of all purchases made during this time to USN.  So swing by Parnassus to buy your books on May 24, or if you can’t wait to start reading, you can go to parnassusbooks.net to buy them now.

Happy reading!
