Latin Students Shine at State Convention

by Diane Sorrel, Latin teacher

Recently 22 high-school students participated in the Tennessee Junior Classical League’s State Convention on the campus of the University of Memphis.
The event was particularly exciting for us because Elizabeth Flatt (President) and Jessica Schreiber (Historian) served as officers of the organization this year. They worked hard and treated everyone to a highly organized and well-run event, despite the challenges involved in last minute reorganizing of activities and locations due to a (false) bomb threat and campus lockdown.

Our delegate count put us in Division AAA (schools bringing 22 or more students); this meant that we were competing against schools bringing up to 53 delegates. Nonetheless, our students participated widely and vigorously in academic tests, art competitions, dramatic Latin recitations, Certamen (Latin quiz bowl), various Olympika events, a skit competition, and the Spirit Contest.

Mr. Espenant, the epitome of Gallic bonhomie, assisted me as a chaperone for the trip and made many beautiful photographs. Jessica Schreiber also provided pictures. Look for them and video of our chariot race in the accompanying gallery.
