8th Grader Learns Lesson in State Geography Bee

by Matt Lukach, 6th grade social studies teacher

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society.
The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge.

Back in January, eighth grader Basil Egli emerged as USN’s middle school champion, affording him the opportunity to compete at the state level. Last Friday, the event was held in Nashville where Basil performed exceptionally well during the preliminary round. His score of seven correct answers out of a possible eight put him in the position of a single-elimination, tie-breaker scenario in hopes of securing one of ten coveted spots in the finals. Unfortunately, Basil didn’t make it out of the tie-breaker but still managed to showcase his remarkable knowledge of world geography.

Interestingly, Basil knew the correct answers to both of the questions he answered during the tie-breaker round, only to second guess himself and cross them out. He had enough of a sense of humor to pose for a photo with the fateful slips of paper that clearly shows the correct answers scribbled out (pictured). Teams of psychoanalysts and philosophy scholars could tirelessly debate over the exact meaning behind all of this. Basil says that he’ll hold onto these slips of paper as a reminder to trust his instincts more.

Congratulations to Basil for representing USN with style and class. If you see him around campus, give him a pat on the back. Just resist the urge to tell him that Peru, not Brazil, is home to the city of Iquitos, which sits on the northern stretch of the upper Amazon.
