Theatre Department News

by Catherine Coke

As the fall semester is coming to an end, HS Theatre is not only finishing up but also heating up for next semester.
Last Saturday night, the Student Theatre Guild presented its first offering for the season: BlackBox! With the audience seated onstage, performers presented a variety show containing songs, monologues, scenes and improvisation by Soup Opera.

Also in the works: both the Student Theatre Guild and the Arts Department Theatre Program have held auditions in the past two weeks. The STG auditioned and cast 61 participants for the annual Scene Night Production.

These student actors will be directed by 12 student directors, and several of the scenes have been written by student playwrights. Add technicians, and Scene Night will involve 78 students. Performances are Thursday-Saturday, January 22-24.

The Theatre Program held auditions for the Winter 2015 Production of The Adding Machine, a 1923 play by Elmer Rice. The large cast of 21 includes veteran performers as well as newcomers to the stage. Performances will be Wednesday-Saturday, February 11-14.

More information on both Scene Night and The Adding Machine will be forthcoming in January newsletters.

In between now and then, there will be a public reading of 2014 alumnus Jack Rayson’s new play, Saint Rabbit. The presentation, a part of Centennial Arts Center’s Monthly Reading Series, will be on Monday, January 5 at 7PM. Students Aidan Watt ’15, McKenna Harrington ’16, Megan Kasselberg ’16, and Mark Pierce ’16 will participate. Admission is free.
