Cross Country Teams to Compete in State Meet

by George Flatau, cross country coach

The boys' and girls' cross country teams are both headed back to the State Meet on Saturday at the Steeplechase Course at Percy Warner Park.
With the fog slowly lifting to reveal a nearly perfect day to race, the USN cross country teams raced well at the Region Championships, bringing home runner-up hardware.

The girls raced bright and early, taking to the hills of the Steeplechase with determination. Webb Knoxville set the early pace, but the Tigers moved up the field as the race progressed and narrowed the lead. With four runners (Ella Steinhilber, Lydia Warren, Lauryn Cravens, and Josephine Zenker) in the top 11 (thus earning All-Region honors), the girls pack running solidified their second place finish, behind Webb Knoxville but ahead of last year's Region champion, St. Cecilia.

The boys followed soon after, with a race that was even closer than the girls'. Webb Knoxville managed to edge most of the Tiger harriers, and a few seconds here and there made the difference. With six runners (Wolf Robinson, Simpson Tanner, Mackenzie Myers, Kellon Patey, Duncan Clark, and Harry Compton) in the top 15, the team finished a strong second, despite missing perennial team leader Dylan Groos to injury.

Later that day, the JV teams also took part in the unofficial "JV State Championship," with schools from as far as Memphis and Chattanooga in addition to local powerhouses. The girls, led by Sarah Knight, ran well enough to finish fourth, and the boys, with a strong front pack of AJ Dykens-Hodapp, Connor Shockley, Crawford Lyons, Silas Wuerth, and Bradford Johnson, finished sixth.
