ADVISORY PROGRAM

Each student is assigned a faculty advisor, whose role is multi-faceted.  The advisor helps the student adjust to the High School; monitors the student's progress; offers academic advice; imparts information to and collects information from the student; oversees the student's involvement in co-curricular activities; serves as a contact between the student's family and USN; lends ongoing support to the student; assists the student in scheduling courses; and organizes group projects involving the student and fellow advisees.

During the school week, advisors meet with their group on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 10-20 minutes.  This is a time for advisors to check in with students, make announcements about upcoming events or opportunities that involve them, and gather feedback to pass along to other individuals or groups.  Students meet informally with their advisors on an ongoing basis, as well as during scheduled, required advisory meetings.

Advisors receive copies of all progress reports and grade sheets throughout the year. On conference days, students and their parents meet with advisors, who have collected and summarized grades and progress notes.  As a group, they review the student’s progress, celebrate the successes, and set goals for future efforts.

Students are assigned to advisors for their first year in the high school.  In following years, they have input about what advisee group they join:  Every spring, students complete advisor selection forms for the next academic year.  Efforts are made to give students someone with whom they have a class or a connection.  In grades 10-12, student requests to keep a particular advisor are honored in most circumstances.
