HS Student Declaration of Values
We, members of the University School community, value intellectual integrity, respect personal rights, and accept the responsibility of our freedom.
STUDENT DECLARATION OF VALUES
In 1986, the high school student body took on the challenge of
producing a statement which would define the values most important to
the high school community. The result of their efforts is the
Student Declaration of Values, which has since that time expressed what
students understand as the core qualities of the high school culture:
We, members of the University School community, value intellectual
integrity, respect personal rights, and accept the responsibility of
our freedom.
At the core of the Student Declaration of Values are some important assumptions:
-
The responsibility for maintaining the health of the school community is shared by all members, including students.
-
Faculty grant students a higher degree of freedom because students
are careful to act in ways that justify the trust faculty have in them.
-
Students have a responsibility to help create and maintain a
community where mutual respect and acceptance are evident in what they
say and what they do.
-
Students must respect the needs and feelings of others in ways that
reflect a commitment to the school community, its values, and the
people whom it includes.
-
An irresponsible act of one student can weaken the fabric of the
entire community, so for the sake of all, every student must act
responsibly.
-
To have the trust and respect of others, everyone must speak and act truthfully, even when it is difficult to do so.
-
Respecting the school community includes respecting and maintaining the campus within which that community resides.
-
Despite the pressures, internal and external, to the contrary, students should enjoy learning for its own sake.
-
To get the most out of their education, students must accept the
responsibility to be prepared for class each day, and to do so without
relying on others.
