Teaching and Learning in a Diverse School Setting

Multicultural education at USN is a process and philosophy dedicated to the ideals and practice of 1_blackboard.jpgcultural pluralism, education equity and community building.  By modeling open-mindedness, self- and mutual respect, critical inquiry and reflective practice, USN faculty create educational experiences through which all children can become forward thinking, out-reaching, socially active and civically responsible.

Characteristics essential to the definition and practice of multicultural education:

  • Inclusive definition of diversity, i.e., socio-economics, religion, gender, sexual (relationship) orientation, age, ability, race, ethnicity, family composition, etc.
  • Planned, purposeful, comprehensive and developmental instruction
  • Adult modeling of openness to difference, multiple perspectives
  • Use of different teaching styles, interdisciplinary instruction
  • Awareness of and commitment to cultural pluralism, cross-cultural understanding, educational equity and social justice.
  • A safe, mutually respectful school climate that promotes honesty, trust and, risk-taking among adults and students
