Human diversity makes tolerance more than a virtue; it makes it a requirement for survival. -- Rene Dubos
Often used, and frequently misunderstood, the meaning of the word diversity continues to evolve with changing demographics and a deepened understanding of the complexity of the human condition. This dynamism notwithstanding, University School defines diversity as the presence and expression of the broad range of human differences including-- but not limited to--every racial and ethnic background, religious and political affiliation, national origin, age, socioeconomic status, sexual/relationship orientation, ability level, and family constellation.
Diversity is not about others. It is not a program, event, or destination. Diversity is about everyone; it is a measure of each person’s uniqueness within overarching similarities.
University School believes that when attention to diversity is coupled with regard for shared values and beliefs, educators advance both the quality of education necessary for success in a multicultural society and the highest ideals on which our nation was founded.
